Riverside Testing Standards

Special testing instructions in italics
Megohmeter up to 15KV:

  • All incoming motors
  • Test voltage should be applied for one minute

Open winding test using ohmmeter:

  • All incoming 3-phase motors
  • Test between phases for continuity 1-2, 1-3, 2-3

Incoming test run at rated voltage:

  • All motors after megohmeter test, checking for open winding using
  • ohmmeter, and turning shaft by hand.
  • Check for balanced amperage
  • Listen for any out of the ordinary electrical or mechanical noises

Surge Test Using Baker D6000 Tester:

  • Incoming on all motors after disassembly
  • Customer request
  • Test voltage used should be twice the rated voltage plus 1000 volts

Polarization Index (PI) Test:

  • Incoming, if not a rewind, on all motors 200HP and up
  • Outgoing on all motors 200HP and up
  • If megohmeter readings are questionable
  • Customer request
  • If test indicates that the motor is questionable according to the chart located on the PI tester, customer must be advised before proceeding

DC Hi-Pot Test Using Baker D6000 Tester:

  • All rewinds up to 480V
  • Incoming on motors where winding appears questionable, but passes all other tests
  • Customer request
  • See testing information below
  • Hi-Pot tests for reconditioned windings should be performed at 65% of the new winding test value

DC Hi-Pot Test Using 50,000V Tester:

  • All rewinds 600V and up
  • Incoming on motors where winding appears questionable, but passes all other tests
  • Customer request

AC Hi-Pot Test:

  • All rewinds after DC Hi-Pot test
  • Customer request
  • Hi-Pot tests for reconditioned windings should be performed at 65% of the new winding test value

Core Loss Test up to 5000HP using Phenix CL125A:

  • Before we burn out a stator
  • After a stator is burnt out
  • After any iron work over 200HP
  • Any damaged core
  • If questionable for any reason
  • Customer request
  • Any core above 4 watts per pound is considered questionable and if all repairs possible have been done to core, customer should be contacted and made aware of the questionable core before proceeding

3- Phase Pole Alignment Test (Spinner Test):

  • All 3- phase rewinds
  • Customer request

Phase balance test using test panel and EASA standards:

  • All rewinds before assembly

Growler- Rotor bar test:

  • All rewinds
  • All motors where rotor has contacted stator
  • Any motor where rotor shows signs of heat

Outgoing test run:

  • All motors at rated voltage
  • If dual voltage, run at incoming voltage
  • If dual voltage and no leads are connected incoming and customer voltage is not known, run at highest voltage. Make sure no leads are left connected after test.

Vibration Signature using SKF Microlog CMVA60:

  • All outgoing motors 200HP and above
  • Customer Request
  • If there are any questionable readings, the data must be analyzed by our in- house Level 2 certified vibration analyst

Voltage Drop Test using test panel (DC or AC voltage), coils in series:

  • All pole pieces for DC motors and generators
  • Variation in DC voltage drops should not be greater than 5% between coils of same field circuit. 10% variation in AC test results is acceptable if the DC test is within limit

Bar to Bar Test:

  • All armatures
  • Customer request

Continuity Test- (Lamp out/Ohm out):

  • On any motors with more than 3 leads and incomplete labels on leads

Low Ohm Resistance Test:

  • Customer request

Thermal Imaging using a calibrated and certified infrared camera:

  • Customer request

Precision Dynamic Balancing up to 12ft diameter and 20,000 pounds:

  • All motors over 50HP
  • Motors under 50HP upon customer approval or if motor does not run smooth incoming. (Customer may not want to pay for balancing on smaller motors. However, if the motor runs rough incoming, it must be balanced before leaving our shop to be covered under warranty.)
  • Customer Request
  • Balanced equipment must be balanced below “GOOD” on the chart below, preferably excellent
  • Chart with tighter specs should be used for anything balanced other than motor rotors. Chart below is only for rotors.

I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ABOVE PROCEDURES AND WILL PERFORM ALL TESTING AS STATED ABOVE. I WILL ALSO DOCUMENT TESTS DONE AND RESULTS OF TEST ON OR ATTACHED TO ALL JOB CARDS THAT COINCIDE WITH THE EQUIPMENT TESTED.
